What is Ozone and How Does It Work?

Ozone (O3) is a naturally occurring gas that is a powerful disinfectant. It oxidizes harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, mold, and chemical pollutants. Arbo3’s System One utilizes ozone technology to safely purify the air in your car, home, or office, creating a healthier and cleaner environment.

Ozone is safe. Ozone is all around us, always. It is part of the air we breathe. That rain-fresh smell in the air after a thunderstorm – that’s due to elevated concentrations of ozone in the air created by lightning and the down-rush pressure of rain.

It smells clean for a reason – because it is. Ozone is one of nature’s strongest disinfectants. Outside, both ozone and ultra-violet (UV) light provide natural protection against viruses, pathogens and other air contaminants. UV light travels in rays so its sanitizing effect is line-of-sight only. Ozone is gaseous, and as such contacts all surfaces and pollutants equally, making it superior in terms of ability to sanitize environments.

Like ozone, bleach (the most common household cleanser) smells ‘clean’. Like bleach, ozone cannot be used in high concentrations without harming humans or animals.

Arbo3 recreates that rain-fresh sanitary environment indoors, by accurately and continuously monitoring and controlling ozone levels in enclosed commercial and consumer environments. Arbo3 brings outside indoors and gives you complete control.

It doesn’t. We don’t try to filter particles like traditional air purifiers. Arbo3 is a revolution in indoor air-quality that uses a mesh of cloud-connected ozone generators and highly accurate sensors to continually monitor and maintain the indoor ozone levels to a preset target level (typically 50 parts-per-billion). Instead of filtering, Arbo3 neutralizes – pathogens, viruses, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), smells/odors, and noxious (NOx) gases (and more) in the air – continually, and without the need to purchase and change expensive filters.

Arbo3 systems also incorporate a Turbo Mode capability. In Turbo Mode, presence sensors are employed to ensure there are no humans or animals present. When that condition is met, Arbo3 is capable of ramping ozone concentrations to higher-than-natural levels to accelerate and turbo-charge sanitization and cleansing. Turbo Mode is immediately and automatically de-activated whenever a live presence is detected. Think of sanitizing the inside of a taxi between rides.

Ozone is effective against all air contaminants. Ozone is gaseous, and so contacts all surfaces, air particles and components equally. It neutralizes odors and pollutants through the process of oxidation, changing the chemical make-up of organic compounds and breaking down cellular walls of viruses. Its effectiveness as a disinfectant is determined by Watson’s Law and Chick’s Law.

Chick’s Law states that, N=N0e-kt,where N0 = starting pathogen starting count, k = ozone reactivity, and N= ending pathogen count.

As such, ozone’s effectiveness varies depending on the contaminant of interest, exposure-time, and exposure concentration. Arbo3 controls the time and concentration of ozone exposure to ensure continual, safe, and visible sanitization.

Typically, at air concentrations of 50 ppb (parts-per-billion), ozone is noticeably effective at removing odors within 5 minutes. Each pathogen / virus reacts differently. E.g. 99%+ of a typical flu virus might be de-activated within 10 minutes, while a more resistant virus such as Covid-19 may take twice as long at the same ozone concentration. Regardless, extended exposure always results in reduced contamination.

Arbo3 has been proven in independent laboratory tests to remove 99.99%+ of all contaminants.

Through oxidation. Ozone (chemical symbol O3) is a close cousin of oxygen (symbol O2). Ozone is unstable in that it constantly wants to free itself of its additional ion, degrading back to oxygen in the process. The free ion combines easily and principally with organic compounds, changing their chemical composition and neutralizing them. Odors, viruses, and pathogens are all organic compounds organic compounds. In the same way, ozone is highly selective against NOx gases (NO and NO2), oxidizing them into to higher-order less harmful, soluble nitrate ions.

Indoors, ozone quickly degrades back to oxygen. Without UV as a source of continual ozone replenishment (UV will not pass through glass, and cold A/C vents destroy ozone), indoor ozone concentrations can quickly fall below 10ppb. Arbo3 compensates for this by ensuring there is always a monitored and controlled supply of ozone. This is effective at providing constant virus control.

Arbo3’s Turbo Mode is designed to operate in unoccupied spaces. It offers additional intermittent deep cleansing, only when environments are vacant. Yes – very easy. System One is designed to be maintenance free for a warranty period of 2 years. Beyond 2 years, Arbo3 recommends units are refurbished, where the sensors are checked for accuracy and replaced if necessary. Arbo3 offers a replacement program, for a fixed annual fee, where individual units can be exchanged once every 2 years.

Other than keeping the units charged and dust-free, there is no other maintenance required. The Arbo3 App and Web Portal each monitor device aging / replacement.

Two years. We also offer a refurbishment or exchange program for all devices older than 2 years.

System One is built from recyclable plastics. To avoid creating electronic waste, Arbo3 offers a refurb / exchange program for our products. Products older than 2 years can be returned to Arbo3 for recycling free of charge.
